THE END of March is almost here, but looking through the ski window one can see still more and more snowy precipitation. Father Winter keeps holding the situation safely in his hands and it seems that during this ski season there has not been a more ideal time for skiing than now.
All the ski centres above 800 metres report excellent conditions with the higher ones offering fresh, powdery snow daily and the lifts costing just ‘a little’. The snow stick at the top of Chopok is currently recording 300 cm of snow and new snow keeps falling.
During the whole week Slovakia will have February-like weather – snow, wind and cold. In the mountains at elevations above 1,500 metres, the daytime temperatures will go up to only -8 to -2 degrees Celsius.
Some smaller centres are open now only on weekends, from Friday to Sunday, but the top centres are operating all week long. Night skiing is now limited in most centres too. Skiers should keep an eye on warnings from the Slovak Hydro-Meteorological Institute at www.shmu.sk, as in higher elevations there can be strong winds and some lifts may not be operating.
