CULTURAL EVENT: Courtyard Opening (Otvárame Nádvorie), Nádvorie-Priestor Súčasnej Kultúry (Courtyard-Space for Contemporary Culture), Trojičné Square 5, Trnava, Apr 4-8

A concert of Slovak diva Jana Kirschner opens the operation of the new culture centre in Trnava. The four-day programme includes workshops for children and adults, concerts (Hudba z Marsu, Para, DJ Tager, Jana Andevská, Medial Banana, and for children Pánko), theatre performances, discussions, lectures, flea market, creative market, and more.
Admission to all events is free.

CLASSICAL MUSIC FESTIVAL: Nitra Musical Spring (Nitrianska Hudobná Jar), Nitra Synagogue, Pri Synagóge 3, Nitra, Apr 5 -26

The 45th year of this festival of classical music opens with operatic and operetta melodies as performed by the J. Rosinský Elementary Art School and the Hungarian Vác Orchestra, conducted by Pál Farkasz. Other events include Thesaurus, a collection of Hebrew Oriental melodies played by the Solamente Naturali ensemble (Apr 10), classical flamenco by Natalie and Martin Bies (Apr 12), a piano recital by Marián Lapšanský (Apr 19) and other concerts.

Two evenings of this mini-jazz-festival offer foreign musicians and international cooperation. On the first day, US jazz pianist Aaron Goldberg (Harvard, collaborations with Wynton Marsalis, Terry Gibbs, Wayne Escoffery) will join forces with Lukáš Oravec Quartet (young Slovak jazz trumpeter and composer Lukáš Oravec, Slovak drummer Marián Ševčík, Czech double bass player Tomáš Baroš). On April 27, renowned French jazz-funk Damien Schmitt returns to Žilina with his Dam’nco project.

MARTIAL ARTS: Muay Thai Evening 9 ZEREX Fight Night – City Sports Hall, Mládežnícka 1, Trenčín, Apr 7.

The evening of K1, Muay Thai, MMA and box duels starts at 18:00 with exhibition matches and culminates at 19:00 with the main programme, including duels of local star, Lukáš Mandinec, his Thai rivalt Yodpitee Petchrungruang, local fighters (Monika Chochlíková, Lukáš Mandinec, Jakub Dobiaš, Martin Čermák, Miro Trenčiansky) and a light and sound show.

CLASSICAL MUSIC FESTIVAL: Trnava Music Spring (Trnavská Hudobná Jar) 2018, churches and venues around Trnava, Apr 7, 9, 29, May 11, 31, June 10

A concert on April 7 at 19:30 in the Franciscan St James’ Church opens the 50th jubilee of this classical music festival. The first and the second (April 9, 20:00, St Nicolas’ Basilica) concerts both focus on the “spiritual music of UK’s cathedrals”. The first offers the Choir of the St Peter’s Cathedral in Exeter, Britain (Timothy Noon – conductor, Timothy Parsons – organ, playing works of J. Taverner, J. Dove, H. Purcell, S.S. Wesley, J. Stainer, and G.F. Handel). The latter concert brings the Choir of the Virgin Mary Cathedral in Edinburgh, Scotland (Duncan Ferguson – conductor, works by G.F. Handel, G. Fauré, B. Britten, F. Poulenc). On April 29, The Grand Piano Recital presents French soloist Eugen Indjic from Paris, playing works of R. Schumann, and F. Chopin.

ART OF MIME/CIRCUS: Anima Allegra, Apr 16-22, Sports Hall, Olympionikov Street Prievidza (Apr 16, 19:00), Bratislava, Angels Arena Košice (Apr 20, 19:00), Arena Poprad (Apr 22, 18:00)

The “Joyful Soul”, i.e. Anima Allegre, is a combination of artists from world-renowned new-type circus Cirque du Soleil and the clowns’ theatre Licedei from St Petersburg, and a fusion of the art of mime and clowns, as performed around the world, from North America to Europe.

CLASSICAL MUSIC FEST: Košice Music Spring (Košická Hudobná Jar), House of Arts, Moyzesova 66, Košice, Apr 19-May 17, 19:00

The opening concert of the 63rd year of the festival of classical music in Košice will introduce the local State Slovak Philharmonic Košice (ŠfK) as conducted by Yu-An Chang, with soloist Bruno Philippe on cello, playing Islamey, Op. 18, by M. Balakirev, Sinfonia concertante, Op. 125 by S. Prokofiev, and Symphonic Dances Op. 45 by S. Rachmaninov. Other concerts bring the Parallax Saxophone Quartet, Opera Pele-Mele, Pavel Haas Quartet with Robert Roth, Capella Mariana, Goldberg Variations and more.

MODERN DANCE: 3 X 20 – Divadlo Štúdio Tanca (DŠT) theatre and dance school, Komenského 12 (na Kačici), Banska Bystrica, Apr 20-21, 19:00

The second piece created to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the Divadlo Štúdio Tanca (DŠT) theatre and dance school hails young, talented local choreographers and dancers, plus three interesting personages of the local scene, A. Petrovič, L. Homola, and T. Trulik. Their three shorter pieces (4 Hlavy, ex, and Pravý uhol) will premiere on April 20 and re-run on April 21.

GASTRONOMY: Natura Vinum 2018 – Old Synagogue, Zvonárska 6, Košice, Apr 21, 16:00

The “festival of beautiful wines” enables visitors to meet exceptional crafts and professionals of viticulture not just from the region around Košice but also from the whole of Slovakia and abroad. The idea behind this meeting is to unite wineries that make wines considering their own terroir and unique characteristics. More than 100 wines form 20 wineries will offered. The mystic environment of the old synagogue in Zvonárska Street adds to the atmosphere.

JAZZ CONCERT: Juraj Griglák Trio feat. Poogie Bell and E. Vizváry – Blue Note Music Club, J. Hašku 18, Nové Mesto nad Váhom, Apr 28, 20:00

Juraj Griglák is a renowned Slovak bassist who also plays double bass (including in the Slovak Philharmonic) and his band includes keyboardist Eugen Vizváry, a sought-after composer, arranger, producer in Slovakia and the Czech Republic, and US drummer Poogie Bell, a true funk master who has played with big names like Stanley Clark, Marcus Miller, David Bowie, Erykah Badu, All Jarreau, David Sanborn, John Scofield, Victor Wooten and Chaka Khan. In the western-Slovak jazz club, they will join forces for local jazz lovers.
