WHAT a fine, unusual Advent concert took place on December 13 in Stupava’s main church at 17:00, sharp! Offered by the town’s Cultural Centre in the presence of its director, Pavel Slezák, and the mayor, Ľubomír Žiak, it featured the musical ensemble Tamburizza Ivan Vukovic from Parndorf, Austria. Composed of twenty virtuosos playing a traditional Croatian stringed instrument called a ‘tanburica’, somewhat akin to a lute, the ensemble performed under the lead of maestro Johann Maszl, a true man of music who sings while conducting and who also plays when needed.
The accompanying choir is led by two excellent vocalists, mezzo-soprano Nina Tarandek and tenor Robert Maszl, also a guitarist in the group. Their programme was bright, lively, and varied, ranging from Bach to British and US Christmas carols, and even Spanish couplets. What’s more the musicians enjoyed their repertoire as much as the audience. Such zest, combined with talent, is a winning combination and it is no wonder that they received the Gold Medal at the Osijek competition in Croatia. The blending of the instruments was so harmonious that it sounded at times like an organ and enraptured the audience.
An enthusiastic reception and a long standing ovation emanated from the crowded nave. Don’t miss Tamburizza Ivan Vukovic when they return to Slovakia, hopefully soon. Alternatively, Parndorf is just forty kilometres from Bratislava.
