THE NEW book entitled The First 50 Steps (Prvých 50 krokov) displays photographs of Tóno Sládek's hometown accompanied by Fero Gyárfáš's poems. While the language of photography is international, the Slovak texts are translated into English and German.
Sládek's 72 black and white photographs depict the city in an unusual way - not showing the usual sights but instead the details of houses, hidden courtyards, and the play of light and shadows in the streets. Gyárfáš, who makes his debut as a poet with this book, perfectly compliments Sládek's pictures with his poems, capturing the atmosphere of the photos in words. The two published the book with their own money.
The book's title is taken from one of the poems, which says that the first 50 steps we make after leaving home are decisive. The book can be ordered directly from the photographer at tonos@dom.sk or is available in selected bookstores for Sk200-250.
