Even though the weather in Bratislava is 10 degrees warmer than average, preparations for Christmas are going to plan and on Friday, November 2, the city council installed the traditional Christmas tree in the Main Square.
“The city traditionally starts the preparations for the Christmas markets in early November,” said Bratislava Mayor Ivo Nesrovnal. “An inseparable part of this is the installation of the Christmas tree.”
The city has to install the tree first as the construction of the Christmas market stalls on the central squares would make this impossible later.

This year the Christmas tree is a blue spruce. The 30 year old, 14-metre high tree is a gift presented by the Milan Gocký family from Bratislava’s borough of Rača. It was growing in their garden in the way of gas piping and had to be cut down.
The Christmas market on Hviezdoslavovo Square, organised by the Old Town borough, will start on November 16, while the Christmas market on the Main and adjacent Františkánske Squares, organised by the city council, will start on November 23. They will last until December 22.
