ONE of the most respected Slovak artists of the second half of the 20th century, Karol Baron, died on February 29 in a Paris hospital after being hit by a car. Three days earlier he was opening his exhibition Pastels (1968 - 1991) at the Les yeux fertiles gallery.
Born in the eastern Slovak town of Levoča, Baron would have been 65 next September. A member of the legendary surrealist movement in the former Czechoslovakia, he was banned from exhibiting after 1970. He held dozens of exhibitions at home as well as abroad and his works are in private and gallery collections.
His Paris exhibition will run until the last Saturday in March.
