THE EASTERN Slovak town of Levoča will host an outdoor workshop of artists from the Visegrad Four countries between August 13 and 21. Up to 20 sculptors, wood carvers and painters from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia will create their works in the main square and nearby streets of the town in front of spectators' eyes.
The workshop takes place during the Days of Master Paul, a festival dedicated to one of the greatest European woodcarvers who ever lived on the territory of current Slovakia, which runs from June to October. The architecture of Levoča hosts a number of later Gothic masterpieces created by this artist or of those that were created in his workshop.
The festival will continue the following weekend of August 19 and 21, with the Carpathian Market of Handicraftsmen, where about 40 artisans will exhibit and sell their products. The culmination of the festival will be the grandiose light show, Magic Levoča, which will start at 21:00 on August 20. Lights of various colours will illuminate the historical square, significant buildings and town walls. Throughout the evening a wide range of cultural events and programs will entertain visitors until the early morning. Organisers have combined the finale of the festival with the 755th anniversary of the first ever written reference to Levoča, which falls on September 19.
