National winners of Sony Photo Awards announced

IN MID March, the national winners of the Sony World Photography Awards were announced, with Slovak winner Peter Svoboda and his winning photo is “Passing By” honoured.

Svoboda, dentist by profession, is based in Košice and aged 47. Along with the other winners his photo will be shown in Somerset House in London in April.

Svoboda’s work was chosen as the single best photograph taken by a Slovakian photographer entered in any of the 10 open categories. He won a camera, organisers announced.

Two more Slovaks were awarded Slovakia National Award: Ivana Kováčová placed second and Matej Michalik third. The National Awards programme honours and rewards the best single image taken by a local photographer and runs in 60 countries across the world from Argentina to Australia. It is open to photographers of all abilities. The winners of all 60 National Awards were announced March 15.

On April 21, the Photographer of the Year plus overall Open, Youth and Professional category winners will be announced. Between April 22 and May 8, the 2016 Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition will take place at Somerset House.

The Sony World Photography Awards is the biggest photography competition globally, and its aim is to recognise and reward the best contemporary photography in the world, according to organisers. Free to enter, photographers of all abilities are invited to submit either their best single shots or a series of works. The images are judged by the World Photography Organisation and a specially selected jury from the World Photographic Academy.
