THIS rare picture from the late 19th century offers a sight that no longer exists. The wide Nitra River has since been realigned and now flows through a different area in a much narrower basin.
The first record of a city in this location dates back to the 870s, confirming that Nitra is the oldest city in Slovakia.
Nitra was the centre of the Eastern Great Moravian Empire. The ancient castle that overlooks the river has plenty to boast about, including surviving the Turkish invasion in 1241.
