ON THE last weekend in March, Bratislava’s Nová Scéna theatre, which specialises in musical theatre, premieres a “more serious” piece, the popular US musical The Shop on Main Street, which was based on a novelette by Ladislav Grosman.
The story was also made into a Slovak film in 1965 - the only one so far to receive a US Academy Award.
“It is a musical drama rather than a ‘true musical’,” Nová Scéna head Juraj Ďurdiak told the SITA newswire, adding that The Shop on Main Street is the first piece in a series that is “less entertaining”, which is planned for the next theatre season. “This is a new epoch in the history of the Nová Scéna; the time has come to sacrifice a certain level of commercialness and we can focus on plays that offer great acting performances and bring an important message,” he concluded.
The play is directed by Peter Oravec, who dedicated it to late director Jozef Bednárik. The main characters will be played by Csongor Kassai/Ondrej Kovaľ and Božidara Turzonovová/Zuzana Kronerová. Kronerová’s father acted in the Oscar-winning movie.
