This week’s premieres

Starsky & Hutch (Dvaja detektívi) - Action comedy by Todd Phillips. A campy movie based on the campy 1970s television show about two cops who drive around in their red-and-white Ford Torino while busting-up young hoods. The titular crime-fighting partners are played by Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, who have already shown their natural, easy-going chemistry in Zoolander and Meet the Parents. Reportedly, though, the movie truly belongs to Snoop Dogg, who plays their pimped-out informer, Huggy Bear. Also starring Vince Vaughn as the criminal mastermind Reese Feldman.

Taking Lives (Zlodej životov) - Thriller by DJ Caruso. Evidently, Ashley Judd was busy filming a thriller with Morgan Freeman about a serial killer, so instead the filmmakers landed Angelina Jolie. She plays a gifted FBI special agent who is brought to Montreal to help catch a serial killer who assumes the identities of his victims and thus proves particularly difficult to catch. Ethan Hawke and Kiefer Sutherland also star.
Other movies playing
The Day after Tomorrow (Deň po tom)- Disaster film by Roland Emmerich. Controversy surrounded this film in the weeks leading up to its release, as some see its subject matter - a series of devastating natural disasters brought on by global warming - as a critique of what they consider the Bush administration’s backwards environmental policy. The film’s producers, meanwhile, have said that it is merely supposed to be a roller-coaster-like spectacle. Either way, one thing’s for sure: It’s meant to make money, and lots of it. Directed by the man behind such proudly vacant blockbusters as Independence Day and Godzilla, the movie stars Dennis Quaid and Jake Gyllenhaal.
21 Grams (21 gramov)- Drama by Alejandro Gonzalez Inárritu. The English-language debut of Mexican director Inárritu, who made the fantastic, if rather unfocused, Amores Perros. Much like that film, 21 Grams concerns itself with the way that seemingly disparate people can suddenly be thrust together by a terrible tragedy. Starring Sean Penn, Naomi Watts, and Benicio Del Toro.
