As in previous years OLO, the company responsible for waste collection in the capital, will remove unwanted Christmas trees in Bratislava. It will collect them free of charge and use them to produce electricity at its incineration plant. People need only to dump them at the proper site.

“We will start collecting trees on January 9 in the Old Town; afterwards the collection will continue in Bratislava’s other boroughs,” said Matej Ruščin from OLO. The company will finish the collection by the end of February.

The only thing people need to do is to take the Christmas tree to a site with waste containers. They can also bring them directly to the collection yard of OLO at Stará Ivanská cesta 2. The yard is open daily except Sunday from 8:00 until 18:00.

While only Bratislava and Košice have incineration plants, other towns and villages will also take Christmas trees. They will be processed into wood chips or as bio- degradable material for composting.

Unsold Christmas trees may end up in zoos as fodder. For example, at Bojnice zoo such trees are a welcomed refreshment for their two female elephants - Maja and Gula.

However zoos do not accept used Christmas trees as there might be forgotten hooks or Christmas decorations that may hurt the animals.
