THE INTERNATIONAL film festival of documentaries that focus on pressing issues, One World, organised by the People in Peril civic association, offers several new events in its 14th year, as well as a new motto: We Are Changing the World.
In addition to around 60 documentary films, visitors will also be able to watch three feature films nominated for the LUX Prize of the European Parliament for exceptional movies with social themes. After seeing the films, visitors will be able to vote for their favourite on the luxprize.eu website. The three movies included in the Bratislava-based festival include The Broken Circle Breakdown (BG, NT), Miele (Honey) (IT, FR) and The Selfish Giant (UK).
“Throughout the world and also in Slovakia, civil activism is on the rise,” the festival website reads. “It is as if we have finally understood that governments will not solve our problems for us and that if there is something we don’t like, we just have to change it ourselves. So far, it has been mainly local initiatives that have been successful, but these are just the initial steps on the road to change society as a whole.”
The festival’s ambition is to boost awareness of global and local issues, and it will take place between November 21 and 26 in the Lumiére, Mladosť and KC Dunaj cinemas in Bratislava. There will also be discussions with foreign activists, concerts and exhibitions. A ticket for one film costs €3, €12 for the whole festival or €7 for three days. More detailed information, also in English, can be found at the festival website jedensvet.sk.
