THIS POSTCARD from the beginning of the 20th century depicts the ruins of Pajštún castle, nowadays a popular destination for Bratislava citizens at weekends.
Until 1810, Pajštún was a functional castle. However, Napoleon's army, which was passing through the region at the time, blew it up, despite the castle no longer representing a threat to the Frenchman's forces.
Pajštún enjoyed its most prosperous period in the 14th and the 15th centuries, when it was part of the Malé Karpaty (Small Carpathian mountains) regional defence system. During the Middle Ages this region served as a line of defence against attacks from Moravia and Bohemia, particularly.
