SLOVAK awards for the best music and musicians are relatively new – having started in 2009 – and they are called the Radio Head Awards. Organised by Rádio FM, they select, assess and highlight music from the previous year that sits outside the commercial mainstream.
In early February, the sixth year of this event announced the nominations in four main categories (album of the year, single of the year, concert band/performer of the year and newcomer of the year) and five genre categories (electronic music, hard & heavy, hip-hop/rap/r’n’b, world music/folk and jazz), the SITA newswire wrote.
Other categories are recording of the year, the album of the year-critics’ award and the musical feat of the year. The performers with the most nominations are Korben Dallas (band), with five nominations (although the band can only win four awards, as its pieces have a double nomination in one category, the single of the year) and Jana Kirschner (individual), also with five nominations.
The awards will be handed out in a two-day gala programme on March 28 and 29 in the Slovak radio building. Music fans can vote for their favourites on the radiohlavy.sk website until February 23.
