FOR THE NINETEENTH year running, the Pamiatky a Múzeá (Monuments and Museums) magazine has bestowed its annual prizes for historically and culturally significant activities. The prizes for 2009 were ceremoniously announced at the Old Castle in Banská Štiavnica on September 9 as part of the opening of the Days of European Cultural Heritage. Prizes were given in several categories.
The Best New Exposition prize went to the Eastern Slovak Museum in Košice for an exhibit called the Katov byt (Executioner’s Flat). The prize for Exhibition Acts was won by the Terra Scepusiensis – Terra Christiana 1209-2009 exhibition, which combined a 'traditional' museum presentation with the modern art of Matúš Lányi. Two books were also awarded: Dejiny Slovenského Výtvarného Umenia – Renesancia; (A History of Slovak Art – Renaissance), and Slovensko – Ilustrovaná Encyklopédia Pamiatok (Slovakia – An Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Monu-ments). In the category of “smaller printed matter” Ter-pischora Istropolitana – Tanec v Prešporku 18. Storočia (Terpi-schora Istropolitana – Dance in 18th Century Pressburg) was granted an award. The magazine’s editorial commission granted the Restoration of a Monument prize to the reconstruction of the armoured train Štefánik. Other awards for expert restoration went to authors of the restoration of Medieval frescoes in St Nicholas Church in Poruba and also to the town of Spišská Belá for the revitalisation of the Strážky national cultural heritage complex.
