During the Easter holiday, Slovak convicts have been attending various lectures and participating in sports tournaments, mass and other activities.
“Despite a rich programme of activities organised for prisoners awaiting trial and convicts throughout the year as a part of cultural awareness, hobbies and sports activities, these are expanded at prison facilities by a number of thematic Easter activities in the same manner as at Christmas,” said Adrian Baláž, head of the Justice and Prison Guard Department (ZVJS) as cited by the TASR newswire.
Every facility drafts an extraordinary list of cultural-awareness activities as well as spiritual and pastoral services for Easter. Then there are various sports tournaments, knowledge quizzes, lectures and discussion forums geared towards the Easter holidays, explained Baláž.
As an example, he cited a lecture on Easter customs and traditions in Banská Bystrica penitentiary, a musical group concert and prison Easter football tournament in Dubnica nad Váhom penitentiary (Trenčín Region) and a competition for the most beautifully painted Easter egg held at the all-female prison facility in Nitra.
There are almost 1,560 people on remand and another 8,840 serving prison sentences in Slovakia.
