Festival of Frankovka wine
The wine festival dedicated to the red wine Frankovka (Blaufrankisch or Lemberger) is part of the Coronation festivities. Frankovka is a typical variety for Bratislava’s Rača borough. History says that in 1767 the royal family of Maria Theresa was struck by smallpox. Several members of the family died from the then life-threating disease and Maria Theresa herself contracted the disease too. Her condition was so serious that she received the last sacrament on June 1. A priest from Rača sent her a barrel of this thick red wine also known for its healing effects. The condition of Maria Theresa improved and already on June 27 she received a delegation from Rača. The empress reduced the wine tax for Rača and the priest received a golden ornate. Since this time Frankovka was not missing at the royal table, the history says.
During the festival, local wine producers will offer Frankovka at the Primaciálne Square (Friday 14:00-22:00, Saturday and Sunday 10:00-22:00). Wine lovers will be able to taste the wine for a small fee or buy a bottle of this as well as other local wines.
