The whole pub is buzzing. About a hundred people are sitting around tables in groups of four or five, having lively discussions. Some faces are glowing from a triumphant smile; some are looking around insecurely, some are arguing with their friends. But only for a short time, because the next question is coming.

Pub quizzes are nothing new in Slovakia. However, after years they are still drawing the attention of many people. Michal Vojtek, who organizes quizzes in northern Slovakia, thinks that some teams come to compete on a regular basis.

“Pub quiz have become a weekly routine for some groups of friends,” Vojtek told The Slovak Spectator, explaining that every team chooses its name and usually does not change it so it is easy to distinguish who comes to compete more than once.

The concept of pub quizzes came to Slovakia from English-speaking countries much later but they successfully fill up bars and pubs even today. The quiz consists of several rounds that thematically vary and the topics depend on “the quiz master.” He or she prepares questions, moderates the quiz and evaluates the answers of the teams.
