THE ASSOCIATION for Culture, Education and Communication (ACEC) granted the sixth annual Roma Spirit awards to individuals, a civic association, and a village for their contribution to the support and development of the Roma community.
In the Non-Governmental Organisations category, the award went to the Children of Humanity civic association from Bratislava which supported the development of creative skills of children and youth from disadvantaged environments, including Roma children, within its cycle of creative competitions My World, the TASR newswire reported on December 8.
In the category Village and Town, the village of Čičava, in the Vranov nad Topľou district, was awarded for its effective approach to integrating Roma and activities to support the Roma community.
Ladislav Kurej, head of the Lukustav Company, received the award in the Company, Firm Employer category for business activities made in favour of the inhabitants of Slovenská Volová village in the Humenné district, TASR wrote.
ACEC also awarded Spišské Tomášovce Mayor Zuzana Nebusová for her long-term and continued efforts to improve the living standards of Roma families, and also a reporter of the Sme daily Rudolf Sivý, for his unbiased reports on the life of Roma, as reported by TASR.
In the category Act of the Year, the award went to Jozef Gurguľ, assistant of health awareness in Iňačovce, Michalovce district, for his individual and brave assistance with delivering a child under difficult conditions.
For this year’s In Memoriam award, the participants in the ceremony remembered Roma writer and one of the signatories of the Charter 77 Ľudovít Didi, TASR wrote.
