NEDBALKA, a new gallery on Nedbalova Street, in downtown Bratislava, is currently showing a selection of works by sculptor Juraj Rusňák to mark the artist’s 75th birthday. Curator Katarína Müllerová has named the show Bioformy / Bio-forms.
“He [Rusňák] has had only four exhibitions since 1969, all in Bratislava, and the last one was in 1988. In general, he exhibited very sparsely and for some time already he has been living ‘in the shadows’ of artistic life,” Müllerová told the TASR newswire.
She added she was pleasantly surprised when choosing works for the exhibition, which mostly stem from the 1960s to the 1980s. Almost 70 works in the current exhibition represent various artistic techniques; the earliest date back to 1965.
More than 30 sculptures are included. Three of them are bronzes; the rest are made from plaster and epoxy.
Rusňák, born in Červenica in 1938, belongs to the generation of artists who helped Slovak art keep pace with global developments in the 1960s. His creations are full of sculptural abstraction and discoveries of natural form in the plastic arts, and he also draws inspiration from the sculptures of ancient Greece.
The Nedbalka gallery is, according to its website, the result of an initiative by a non-profit organisation that wants over time to offer to the public works by prominent and influential Slovak artists from the end of the 19th century to the present. It is based in a restored building at Nedbalova 17 and comprises four floors across which a permanent collection is presented alongside temporary exhibitions.
The gallery is open daily except Mondays, between 13:00 and 18:00 and entrance costs €1.50 to €3. More information can be found at www.nedbalka.sk.
