AS WITH every summer, creative objects are appearing in downtown Bratislava's public spaces and galleries. The 18th annual Socha a objekt / Sculpture and Object project held throughout the Slovak capital, which attracts thousands of visitors, was launched on June 27 and will last until the end of August. The project involves more than 90 artists from 19 countries, including France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Russia, Germany, Cyprus, Italy, Serbia, Turkey, Switzerland, Scandinavian countries, the US and Slovakia's next-door neighbours.
The project’s mastermind and curator, Viktor Hulík, said: “This event was first held in the streets, squares and courtyards of Bratislava in 1996 and, gradually, a small exhibition of several Slovak artists has expanded into an important and prestigious international event and has become an inseparable part of Bratislava cultural activities in the summer. The large variety of artists represented at these exhibitions is not a survey of the art scene, but a valuable aesthetic experience for a wide range of spectators and art admirers. The open-air part of the exhibition will take place in Bratislava in Hviezdoslavovo Square and Františkánske Square. The rest of the exhibition will be shown in various galleries in the central part of Bratislava as well as in Piešťany.”
The Big Hall of the Gallery of the Slovak Union of Visual Arts presents the work of the Stirring the Waters | Beyond the Pond Cleveland sculptors, the US Embassy to Slovakia informed. Curated by Ann Albano, it offers the works of 10 Ohio-based sculptors affiliated with The Sculpture Center in Cleveland in the second iteration of the 2012 exchange exhibition with the Boston Sculptors Gallery, then titled Stirring the Waters | Between Two Bodies, a reference to Lake Erie and Boston Harbor.
The exhibition can be seen until August 25, Tuesday through Sunday, between 12:00 and 18:00 (a visit can be arranged outside these hours by calling 02/5296-2402 one day in advance).
