A SLOVAK designer emerged as the overall winner at Poland's biggest fashion event of the year, FashionPhilosophy Fashion Week in Łódź, at the end of October. Twenty finalists from all over Europe presented their collections, but Slovak Andrea Pojezdálová took the top prize.
Pojezdálová received gold literally, in the form of 15,000 Polish zloty, and symbolically, in the form of a golden statuette for her collection, called White. A 22-year-old student at the Bratislava Academy of Fine Arts and Design, Pojezdálová won the Brillance Fashion Talent 2011 (BFT) contest in September with the same collection in a strong competition among Czech and Slovak designers.
Pojezdálová’s success in Poland confirmed the prescience of the BFT jury in spotting a very promising Slovak talent whose collection captured the traditional decorative element of white in a fashionable modern form.
The White collection is Pojezdálová’s first and she commented on its origins.
“I perceived the ‘Shine’ leitmotif of the BFT in the sense of ‘step up’. Traditional decorative elements like embroidery, lace, and bobbin lace are ‘stylised’ and used in a modern way. Slovak folk costumes are marked by richness and the variety of materials used, making layers and gathering – but as a whole it rather suppresses natural female curves and proportions. In my collection this tendency is transformed into current trends in which female curves are sometimes over-stressed and my cuts directly follow and accentuate the ideal female form while encircling the model’s body,” Pojezdálová said in describing her award-winning designs.
