Scientists from the Institute of Parasitology at the Slovak Academy of Science (SAV) have developed anti-tick socks based on natural substances with an insect repelling effect.
“The scientists are presenting a prototype of the functional fibre Prolen Tickfree with a modification based on natural substances which demonstrate a repellent effect against ticks,” said Monika Hucáková, spokesperson for the Slovak Academy of Science, as quoted by the TASR newswire.
The first commercial product using the fibre are socks, she adds. The project is connected with a new approach in parasitology in combination with chemical technology to protect people and domestic animals from ticks and the dangerous diseases they transmit.
The SAV together with universities in Košice are also testing other pieces of clothing as well as equipment to protect domestic animals.
