THE CRAZINESS of this year's snowfall in Slovakia keeps reaching new and higher levels. Reports of new snow have been changing every day but Slovakia’s ski centres are reporting unusually good skiing conditions for the end of March and the beginning of April.
It looks like Jasná and Tatranská Lomnica will have the longest ski seasons in their history. Chopok continues to report more than 300 cm of snow and Cheb in Vrátna, as well as Štrbské Pleso, have a base of about 200 cm.
It’s something of a pity that this generous snowfall only arrived in spring and not actually in the midst of winter. The slopes are half-empty now and some ski centres have restricted their lifts to weekend-only operation, so please check the operating days and hours before you depart for a mid-week trip.
Ski passes probably cannot get any cheaper. The only thing that makes a stay in the mountains a little less pleasant is the unstable weather, with the possibility of more snow falling and windy conditions. Temperatures might also rise to +5 to +7 degrees at elevations up to 1,500 metres. So the snow will be melting all week long but it will be several days yet before spring arrives in full force.
