SOLOŠNICA lies in the Záhorie (western Slovakia) region, beneath the picturesque Malé Karpaty (Small Carpathian) mountains.
The fate of the village lay in the hands of the counts and lords of either of the Malé Karpaty castles: Svätý Jur or Plavecký.
One can see the ruins of Plavecký castle on the distant hill in this picture from the 1900s. There used to be a fortified Celtic settlement on the spreading massif next to it.
Sološnica lies in the foreground. Its name comes from a Hungarian expression - széles kút - meaning a "wide well", as this was previously the location of a large natural watering hole.
