Spring skiing is in the air

EVEN though we are half-way through March, winter is still reigning in the mountains and it does not seem to want to wave an early goodbye. Skiing is ideal. The thickness of the snow base has now reached its deepest, the ski resorts have reduced prices, and there are now only half the skiers on the slopes compared with the high season.

The coming week is expected to be even colder and it could be another winter week with snowfall. During the day, temperatures will be around zero at the beginning of the week and could fall to minus 5 degrees at the end of the week, with early morning temperatures even lower than 10 degrees below zero! But this should be the last breath of winter.

The pre-conditions for good Easter skiing have been created. On the weekend of March 19-21, a Freedown Avalanche Camp ‘10’ will be held in Jasná in which participants learn how to behave in an alpine and sub-alpine terrain and how to enjoy freeriding under the leadership of experienced freeriders. There are fewer events in other resorts and they are tending to prepare for the end of season already – but fortunately for skiers this is still being postponed by Mother Nature.
