IF we accept the thesis that the centre of a community's social life was not just the church but also the pub, then Stupava was more than social enough.
The Hostinec U Hrozna (Bunch of Grapes pub), pictured in this postcard from the end of the 19th century was one of many in the town. Located on Stupava's main street until it was torn down, the pub's visitors were mainly craftsmen, who came to have a drink, play billiards and talk after a day's work.
Despite the indisputable charm of the U Hrozna pub, Stupava can take pride in historical locations of greater significance. A Roman fortress stood in the town until the 5th century. It guarded the Danube, the then border of the Roman Empire. Its remnants are still visible today.
