Svätojánska Valley

SLOVAKIA is a hilly country with abundant forests, and, to this day, gamekeeper's cottages built throughout the ages can be found in many remote locations. Gamekeepers took care of forest game and prevented poaching. In addition, they monitored and organized logging and the planting of saplings.

This postcard from 1938 shows gamekeeper's cottages in "Pred bystrou" in Jánska dolina (valley) in the Low Tatras. In the background there is part of the main mountain ridge with the highest peak of the Low Tatras, Ďumbier (2045 metres). It is possible that the gamekeepers also kept flocks of sheep, because a large portion of the meadow is fenced to protect the sheep from wolves and bears.
