After years of closure, the Morské oko open-air swimming pool in Tornaľa, southern Slovakia, is enjoying a revival. Once a popular summer spot, the site reopened last year following a €500,000 renovation and welcomed over 30,000 visitors in its first season back.

Funding came mainly from the city, with extra support from a regional scheme targeting Slovakia’s least-developed areas, according to My Novohrad.

Despite a small price rise, entry remains affordable. Adults pay €6 for a full day, children aged 3–15 and seniors over 60 pay €3.50, and kids under three go free. Afternoon discounts apply from 16:00. Parking costs €2 per day.

New facilities include beach volleyball and football courts, a Teqball table, a massage tower, a children’s slide, and a better pathway from the car park. Lockers with refundable deposits and a wider food selection have also been introduced.

The 1.5-hectare pool is filled from a 38-metre-deep sinkhole that stays above 12°C in winter and reaches 18°C in summer, attracting divers from across the world. A separate 155-metre borehole taps into mineral-rich water sold under the Gemerka brand.

Camping is not yet available, though the city hopes to restore it in future.

First opened in 1969, the Morské oko complex continues to blend history, nature and local pride.
