JOZEF Dendiš, intimately familiar with the work of Teodor Tekel, is building a private gallery specially dedicated to Tekel's work on Michalská Street in the western Slovak town of Trnava. The gallery will be erected on the exact place where Tekel's house used to stand, TASR reported.
Dendiš's collection features 150 of Tekel's works ranging from oil paintings to pencil drawings. The collector knew the Franciscan priest personally; he even learnt to draw from him. Dendiš himself restores historical artifacts.
An exhibition of Tekel's work held two years ago on the 100th anniversary of the artist's birth in Trnava's Gallery of Ján Koniarek was a huge success. The exhibition also marked a re-discovery of Tekel and his art; the communist regime suppresed it and Tekel died in poverty and oblivion.
