The most for your money at Tirolská Izba

This restaurant has to have the best grilled dishes we have ever tasted. While that is not all the Tirolská Izba (Tyrolean Room) has to offer, grilled meats are definitely a highlight. Not far from the center, and well located for a nice Saturday lunch after shopping in the Trhovisko central, the restaurant seats 32 indoors and an additional 32 on a sidewalk terrace and fills quite fast - so get there early or make reservations. The owners have put a lot of thought and care to offer diners something out of the ordinary. There are a few appetizers offered, including a cheese plate with herb butter (49 Sk) and six snails cooked in herb butter and garlic (89 Sk), Paul's favorite. Three soups are served (19-50 Sk) - Madeline particularly enjoyed the Tirolská cibuľačka (Tyrolean onion soup - 19 Sk), a rich broth loaded with onions and croutons.

The first section of main courses begins with a page of fried foods, pork, veal, turkey, or chicken dishes ranging from 79 to 109 Sk. Try the skewered foods with pork, turkey, salmon and other selections. Paul sampled the skewered turkey with fruit (105 Sk). Attractively displayed, the meat was perfectly done, and the fruit had been grilled as well.

Madeline sampled the bravčoví kotlet "Jager," a pork chop which was also grilled in a mushroom sauce described as "farmers' style" in the menu (115 Sk). The pork chop was also cooked to perfection, and the sauce was rich with fresh mushrooms in a delicate and creamy sauce. A few interesting looking fish dishes are served here - grilled salmon in herb sauce (198 Sk) is one we recommend. The baked Alaskan fish in a wine and garlic sauce (79 Sk) sounded interesting.

Salads here (42 Sk) are very fresh, and if desired the yogurt dressing can be served separately. Salads also come with ham and egg (52 Sk) and ham and asparagus (69 Sk). Other than a mixed salad, vegetarians can select fried Camembert (49 Sk) or fried mushrooms (59 Sk).

For dessert, we shared the farmer's cheese dumplings with strawberry puree (39 Sk). This is a heavy dessert but a nice way to top off your meal. Meals here run about 225 Sk per person if you are not drinking alcohol, making Tirolská Izba one of Bratislava's most reasonably priced restaurants.
