The newest in Slovak cinema

THE LATEST Slovak films and co-productions will be screened during the Slovak Film 2004 festival at Bratislava's Tatra cinema November 23 to 26. The festival's fifth year will also offer a retrospective of works by filmmaker Juraj Herz, on the occasion of his 70th birthday, and mark a new tradition of awarding Slovak "Oscars", called Slnko v sieti (Sun in Net), biannually.

Among the feature and documentary films moviegoers can see is O dve slabiky pozadu (Two Syllables Behind) by Katarína Šulajová. The film will also compete at the Bratislava International Film Festival, running December 3 to 11, where it will be shown with English subtitles. The highly praised documentary filmmaker Pavol Barabáš will present two of his works: Amazonia Vertical and The Tatras - A Mystery. The documentary section will also include Across the Border, a co-production involving five filmmakers from Central Europe - Pawel Lozinsky, Jan Gogola, Robert Lakatos, Biljana Cakic-Veselic and Peter Kerekes.
