FINALLY, the end of January and early February has given us a proper winter with freezing temperatures all day long and frigid conditions at night. But we still lack a good measure of snowfall. For example, the 30 centimetres of natural snow at Štrbské Pleso and the 85 centimetres at Chopok are far too little for the beginning of February. A normal base of snow would be over 1metre – but we will probably need to wait a little longer for that.
In coming days, the snow situation could improve and on Tuesday and Wednesday it is possible that 20 to 40 centimetres of new snow could fall. That would likely enable resort operators to open more slopes, especially in the higher altitude ski resorts that require more snow. In the remaining days of this week, milder snowfalls are expected and as the week ends clear weather is expected again, with temperatures sinking to as low as minus 20 in some mountain valleys.
This Saturday, the biggest Slovak snowboard event will take place – SKOČSY at Štrbské Pleso, where top European competitors will perform in a freestyle show at the snowboard park. Another round of SNOW SHOW in the area of Nová Hoľa at Donovaly will be organised for the weekend with competitions, music, dancing, various skiing presentations and special drinks.
