ONLY two fifths of Slovaks celebrate Valentine's Day, even though almost two thirds of those surveyed are in a stable relationship.
The TNS SK agency recently reported the results of a poll it conducted in January on a sample of 807 respondents more than 15 years old.
The survey also showed that more than a half of Slovaks don't celebrate the day at all.
Those most likely to celebrate it were between 19 and 39 and had a higher education. Of those, one half give their partners candy; every fourth gives flowers or another present; every fifth sends cards, text messages or fixes a romantic dinner at home; and every seventh takes their sweetheart out to a restaurant.
More than a third of those who don't celebrate Valentine's Day said they don't consider it a traditional Slovak holiday. A fifth said they don't observe it because they consider it commercialised or because they're not in a relationship.
