Easter Monday, the last day of the Easter holiday in Slovakia, is usually spent by visiting families and following traditions. These may differ, depending on the region. However, in almost every area the guys whip and pour water on the girls to ensure they will be healthy, fresh and smart for the whole of the next year.
Today, these traditions are usually performed within families and among friends, but especially in the villages, the guys organise themselves into groups and walk around the girls’ houses. As a reward for the whipping and showering, the girls traditionally give out painted Easter eggs, a new ribbon for the whip, cakes, meat or a shot of alcohol but these days they usually give chocolate and money.
