Where do Bratislava pedestrians go?

Photographer Anton Sládek in his book Pawn in the Chessboard of Bratislava focused his camera on people in the city.

Photographer Anton Sládek loves Bratislava and this can be felt from his photographs. He has been taking pictures of the Slovak capital for decades, applying everything he has learned during his professional life, whether he was photographing scenes in the theatre or embroideries.

“A theatre set designer creates a scene and then the actors move around in it. I find a scene in the city and then wait for a person to walk into it,” Sláde explains his modus operandi for The Slovak Spectator.

He not only knows the streets of Bratislava by name, but he also knows when the light is best in them for photography. As František Gyarfáš writes in the introduction of the book: “When Tóno decides of what and how he wants to take a picture, he sets up the camera and lets the sun finish the image.”

Do you stage your photographs?

Not at all. I prefer to find the desired atmosphere in real life.

You like to play with light and shadow a lot in your photographs.
