THE CONFLUENCE of the Orava and Váh rivers creates a beautiful natural setting near the town of Kraľovany. This location also marks the historic border between two regions: Orava and Turiec.
Orava, with the Malá Fatras in the background, used to be among the most backward and isolated of Slovak regions. Accessibility alone was a problem: It was difficult to pass through the steep valleys and the rough Orava River.
In contrast, the neighbouring Turiec region has always been easily accessible, as the Váh River, apart from a few stretches, is easily navigable.
This postcard from World War II shows the legendary Rozsutec peak in the central background.
