Articular church in Hronsek attracts thousands
THE WOODEN Articular Church in the village of Hronsek is one of the rarest and most popular tourist sights in Banska Bystrica district and is visited by thousands of people from Slovakia and also from abroad. It celebrated an anniversary recently – on July 7, 2008 it was placed on the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage list.

A town without fortifications
RUŽOMBEROK is one of the few Slovak towns that did not have a fortification in Middle Ages. It did not even need it, as it lied on a kind of plateau and from both sides, it was protected by the rivers Revúca and Váh.

AVIATION aficionados from the Slovak Federation of Ultra-light Aviation (SFUL) on May 3 commemorated the 96th anniversary of Milan Rastislav Štefánik’s tragic plane crash by landing with their aircraft at the Bratislava airport named after him on Sunday afternoon.
Bochníček discovered star at age 16
FORMER head of the Astronomical Institute of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (SAV) in Tatranská Lomnica, Záviš Bochníček, would celebrate 95 years at the end of April. The man who popularised astronomy throughout his career, managed to discover a star, Nova CP Lacertae, at age 16; and this changed his whole life.
Cog railway opened season in April, starting with Košice ride
THE COG steam train based in Tisovec began its operating season in the end of April when it took a ride to an event in Košice. Throughout the tourist season, it will run twice a month – more than originally planned.
Dobrá Voda commemorated 230th anniversary of birth of cultural activist Ján Hollý
THE VILLAGE of Dobrá Voda in Trnava region has organised a programme for Sunday, April 12, to commemorate the 230th anniversary of Ján Hollý‘s birth, including the reopening of one of his favourite hiking trails. Hollý (1785-1849) was a Slovak translator, poet, priest and a patriot. He took an active part in the Slovak national revival movement in the mid 19th century.
Historian looks into emigration from Orava
EMIGRATION used to be an extensive phenomenon in poorer regions of today’s Slovakia, forming the current face of the country. Historian Juraj Laššuth from Dolný Kubín has looked at this trend around the turn of 19th and 20th centuries in Orava.
