If a country repeatedly elects a leader who declares that Islam has "no place" inside its borders; if an electorate chooses openly fascist deputies to represent it in parliament; if it is acceptable to make monkey noises at opposing black football players; then it is inevitable that people start attacking refugees on the streets.

Because if the primitive is always just below the surface, it doesn’t require much of an invitation to emerge.

Still, the experiences of Somali refugee Khadra Abdile – six unpleasant or violent encounters with Slovaks in 18 months – make for vile reading, even by this country’s standards. Even as a foreigner, I felt ashamed of those people who stood by and did nothing as she was repeatedly robbed, cursed, beaten and strangled.
