Press conferences held by the ruling parties Smer and Hlas after the attack on PM and Smer party leader Robert Fico have turned into open trials. People suspected of crimes such as obstruction of justice, corruption, money laundering, and abuse of the powers of a public official, speak at them.
Some have already been acquitted, but other proceedings continue.
In the eyes of the public, they themselves are replacing witnesses and judges today. They think that one of the most heinous acts in democracy, the attack on the prime minister, should be their acquittal.
They use the tragedy to clear their names before the public, and at the same time rewrite the findings that surfaced after the murder of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancée Martina Kušnírová. They interpret the public’s belief that society is at a crossroads, and deciding which direction the country will take as hatred that resulted in the attack on the prime minister.
