GIVEN how attractive Robert Fico is to the masses, it’s no surprise that pop-singer Tina picked him to become the godfather of her new album Sexy. The choice is natural for the Smer leader as well – elections are coming, and the role of godfather is one he must be accustomed to anyway.
Although Fico admits that he is more of an AC/DC and Guns n’ Roses fan, he says he did find a favourite track on the record – the song Sexy. Let us now examine its lyrics and see how he can relate to its message. But before we do so, here is a short warning – the translation is not to blame for the fact that hardly anything in the song rhymes. That seems to be the intent of the author of the Slovak original.
“I now feel it more, more than ever before. I feel it, baby.
This evening’s about us, until the night ends.”
For Fico, too, this is a moment of unparalleled joy. The right is at war with itself, he unexpectedly gained a chance to come to power after only a minimal break, he may gain enough votes to rule by himself, and even if not, parties are already lining up to form a coalition. This night will not end so soon.
To the untrained eye “baby” may seem insignificant. To those who have read the transcripts of a wire-tapped conversation between Smer vice-chairman Kaliňák and a Pravda journalist, where he calls her just that, this is a clear reference to the improving image of Smer in the media and the general public. The party looted, lied, and excelled in incompetence, but following the months of infighting and chaos for which the outgoing coalition will be remembered, they may seem to many to be a highly professional ensemble ready to bring the country stability.

Yes, Smer has just blocked the transformation of state-run hospitals into corporations with standard accounting and management rules. Other privatisation projects have been stopped as well. The club will indeed belong to them once they are back at the helm. And Fico can look forward to paying not only DJs and popstars, but his cronies too.

Pipelines and Russia, Vladimir Putin especially, are Fico’s favourite topics. At a time when the future of the EU is uncertain, that is somewhat worrying. As is the entire prospect of Fico’s return. Luckily, there is Tina to comfort us:
