One of the things I had most been looking forward to on moving back to Canada was seeing a doctor and a dentist. Not that they don’t exist in Slovakia, but I had always been put off by the ordeal of their waiting rooms. More specifically, by the expectation that you show up early in the morning and simply wait to be seen – theoretically in the order that people claim to have arrived, but in fact more often prolonged by friends and preferred customers of the specialist, who would walk in and immediately be admitted to his sanctuary, often for half an hour or more.
No longer, I thought – here I could just call for an appointment, be kept waiting only long enough to open a magazine, and then bask in his professional concern for my minor ailment.
But that Canada no longer exists.
