Excessively high temperatures on Tuesday, July 24, in Slovakia caused 108 people to faint, which was, however, 32 people fewer than on Monday, Boris Chmel of the Operational Centre of the Slovak Medical Rescue Service told the TASR newswire.
“It seems that people have taken advice and warnings seriously and observed the drinking regimen more consistently,” he said. In the Košice and Prešov regions 17 people in each area fainted, while 11 fainted in both the Bratislava and Banská Bystrica regions. “In the statistics, women prevail: 65 of them collapsed, while only 38 men were affected. Even four children suffered a collapse,” Chmel added. Of those who were affected, 80 were hospitalised.
Recommendations for the upcoming days (and nights), which are expected to be extremely hot, are to drink a lot of water or sugar-free soft drinks containing enough salt and minerals to replenish that which is lost through perspiration, to wear light clothes (preferably not made from synthetic materials), to limit movement as much as possible and to take breaks at work when necessary, the SITA newswire wrote.
