The project to build a combined steam/gas cycle power plant on the premises of the oil refinery Slovnaft in Bratislava has received the go-ahead following an Environmental Impact Assessment procedure. The Ministry of Agriculture, Environment and Regional Development approved its construction provided that ten recommendations are fulfilled.
According to the assessment, carried out in compliance with the law on environmental impact assessment (EIA), the ministry recommended the construction of a combined steam and gas unit with installed capacity of about 880 MW on the premises of the Slovnaft refinery. The main investor in the project is the company CM European Power International, a joint venture by energy groups MOL and ČEZ. During the construction and operation of the power plant the investor is required, for instance, to draft a project to plant trees to replace those removed because of the project, to carry out the maximum isolation of technological equipment and reduction of nitrogen oxides emissions, to partially recycle the water used in the unit for cooling, to limit the use of mechanisms that cause excessive noise, and to modernise an ethylene production unit.
The construction costs of the plant are estimated to be €705 to €720 million, according to the investment plan submitted, as quoted by the SITA newswire. The plant should generate almost 7 TWh of electrical energy per annum.
