99 percent of Slovak firms are SMEs

SMALL and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) made up 99 percent of the total number of companies in Slovakia at the end of 2003, the Statistics Office reported.

Slovakia had 101,412 legal entities last year, of which 64,420 were business companies and 36,992 non-profit organizations, the SITA news agency wrote.

According to the report on the development of SMEs in 2003, Slovakia registered 57,649 trading companies, 1,517 cooperatives, 37 state-owned firms and 5,217 other firms. Compared to the previous year the total number of companies rose by 8.3 percent in 2003.

SMEs accounted for 24.1 percent of Slovak exports last year.
