Mečiar-Horn meeting:
August 15, Györ, Hungary
"If the plan of measures I put to Prime Minister Mečiar is not implemented, it will be rather difficult to develop bilateral relations, and if bilateral relations do not improve, the responsibility will lie with the Slovak party."
Gyula Horn, Hungarian Prime Minister
"Good and friendly relations between Slovakia and Hungary must continue to play an important role in the future. They must be based on the principle of equality between neighboring countries. We expect them [Hungary] to create conditions exactly the same as the Hungarian minority has in Slovakia."
HZDS statement
"The Association of Slovak Journalists considers the nine demands submitted by the Hungarian government as blackmail and an attack against the sovereignty of Slovakia. The Hungarian minority has no problems in southern Slovakia. On the contrary, it is the Slovak majority that must struggle with big problems. For instance, Slovak children cannot attend Slovak schools in some 300 small villages in this region simply because the Slovak language teachers do not speak Slovak properly."
Jan Smolec, Chairman of the Association of Slovak Journalists
Reaction to Constitutional Court Ruling on Gaulieder:
"Some decisions by the Slovak Constitutional Court may seem rather incomprehensible. Nevertheless, this decision proved that the parliament did not violate Article 81 of the Slovak constitution, which says that, 'The Deputy may give up his parliamentary mandate.' Gaulieder did so through his letter sent to parliament. Constitutional Court judges sometimes determine their powers on their own and they do not respect the rights of institutions that are legally authorized to decide on such matters."
Ivan Gasparovič, Speaker of Parliament
"[Ivan] Gasparovič is to blame for this case, as he, a lawyer and former Czechoslovak Federal Republic General Prosecutor, disregards the Constitutional Court's decision, and this is a shame for democracy in Slovakia."
František Gaulieder, Former HZDS member of parliament
