Acute respiratory illness up 68 % in Nitra region

The number of acute respiratory illnesses in the Nitra region rose by 68 percent compared to last week. The Regional Office of Public Healthcare (RÚVZ) in Nitra has registered more than 8,300 persons as ill with 1,374 of those people with the flu and related illnesses, an increase of 74 percent since last week.

The rate of respiratory illness has risen in all regional districts, but primarily in the districts of Topoľčany – by 146 percent, of Nové Zámky – by 118 percent, and of Zlaté Moravce – by 116 percent, the head of RÚVZ, Katarína Tináková told SITA newswire.

As many as 328 patients (4 percent of those ill) had serious complications and in 58 percent of those cases the complication was sinusitis, in 23 percent pneumonia, and in 19 percent tympanitis. The rate is worst among infants and school-age children, as 72 percent of the cases were reported by pediatricians and 60 percent by general practitioners. So far, no local epidemic has been reported, newswire SITA wrote.
