The Afghan soldier who was allegedly responsible for the deadly attack on Slovak soldiers at the Kandahar base in Afghanistan on June 9 has escaped from detention, the Slovak Defence Ministry confirmed for on Monday, July 15. The ministry was informed of the escape by NATO.
"We're not happy to learn this. We believe that the culprit will soon be handed over to justice," ministry spokesperson Martina Balleková told the TASR newswire.
The Afghan soldier was apprehended last Tuesday immediately after he fired at a contingent of Slovak soldiers serving in NATO's ISAF mission at the military base in Kandahar. The attack claimed the life of Sergeant Major Daniel Kavuliak. Six other soldiers sustained injuries, with two of them seriously wounded.
The Afghan regime is full of holes, it is unreliable and incapable of preventing infiltrations of terrorists into its army, security analyst Ivo Samson told TASR with respect to the recent escape from prison of the Afghan soldier responsible for the fatal attack on Slovak soldiers on the Kandahar military base on July 9. "This is a serious warning for the future of Afghanistan with respect to the fact that all international troops are set to leave the country next year," said Samson, who is with the Institute of Security and Defence Studies at the Defence Ministry.
The Sme daily wrote in its Tuesday issue that the shooter escaped with help from the man who was supposed to guard him. They both disappeared and the Taliban, which claimed responsibility for the attack, announced that they were both safe. The Afghan army, which took the attacker over from the US unit, was responsible for the escape. The man who helped him was not a rank-and-file soldier, but rather an army supervisor.
