Slovak Agriculture Minister Zsolt Simon would be very surprised if the EU imposed protective measures in the area of foodstuffs and veterinary care as of EU accession, the TASR news wire wrote.
Although harshly criticised in this area in the past, Slovakia has made significant progress to rank among the best-prepared acceding countries, he said after holding technical talks with the European Commission (EC) in Brussels.
"Food safety used to be criticised in the past, so I was very pleased to hear the EC admit that all these worries are behind us now," Simon said.
He added the EC agreed with Slovakia's schedule for the inspection and closure of food companies that are not meeting the EU standards.
